Picton to Hokitika
Our journey from Picton brought us through some wonderfully beautiful roads. It was my first attempt at driving on the left side of the road and I even made it through some incredibly winding, twisting stretches without killing anyone. All of the bridges along the way are a one way road, so you need to take turns crossing.
We made an impromptu stop to experience New Zealand's longest swinging bridge over the Buller River. We opted out of the jet boat ride on the river though.
Our journey to Westport followed the Buller River gorge. It was a beautiful drive.
Our first destination was the town of Westport on the west coast. There is a fur sea colony in Tauranga Bay that we wanted to see. We were not disappointed. It was hard to tear ourselves away from them, they were just delightful.
We left Westport and headed down the coast. Next stop was Punakaiki to view the pancake rocks and blowholes. These limestone rock formations were formed 30 million years ago and were uplifted from the ocean floor where they were weathered into their unique shapes.
Our journey for the day ended at the charming seaside town of Hokitika.
Tomorrow we journey through Arthur's pass to Timaru via Christchurch, where we will join Amalia's mum, dad and auntie for lunch. We can't wait to meet them.
